This project is designed to foster student relationships with Centre County-based streams through participation in stream fieldtrips at least twice per school year. The project promotes active student participation, building knowledge about streams and watersheds, development of informed community citizens, and creating a collaborative effort among various stakeholders to facilitate the project. The general objectives for this project focus on involving school age children in water and watershed activities in ways that will encourage them to become active in local and regional environmental initiatives. Individual teachers determine the detailed objectives as they plan their stream site fieldtrips. Currently, 5th –12th graders participate in the project.

Project Accomplishments:

  • During the School Year (SY) 00-01, a total of 1,592 children participated in the Connections Program.

  • The Annual Connections Summit Meeting was held on May 21, 2001 at the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center in State College, PA and was sponsored by the Spring Creek Watershed Commission. The Summit provided and opportunity for Connections students, volunteers, and teachers to share their experiences with the public and members of the Spring Creek Watershed Commission and the SCWC Coordinating Committee. Students also brought along examples of their work as well as photographs from their trips.
